‘Playing for Success’ students recognised at Foundation presentation evening

Saints mascot Bernie the dog was on hand to present the awards at the Foundation’s termly presentation evening for the ‘Playing for Success’ programme.

Held in the Rodber Suite at Franklin’s Gardens, over 250 parents, carers, pupils and teachers from four participating schools attended the awards ceremony to celebrate the students’ achievements.

The children were presented with a certificate of achievement, a Saints medal and a t-shirt as a reward for attending 20 hours of extra learning after school, and got the opportunity to meet Saints mascot, Bernie.

Pupils from Lyncrest Primary, St Gregory’s RC Primary, Earl Spencer Primary and Abington Vale Primary schools had been attending classes within the Foundation Centre for one night a week for eight weeks, with a wide range of curriculum activities including:

  • Name-badge making (ICT)
  • Origami sports kit design
  • A stadium tour with questionnaire
  • Meeting and interviewing a Saints player
  • African drumming
  • Archery
  • Fencing
  • Circus skills
  • Science workshop
  • Drama workshop on the life of Edgar Mobbs
  • Learning the Haka
  • Tag Ruby session with Saints community coaches

Foundation Centre manager Pete Austen said: “A great evening was had by all, and the children left with big smiles on their faces.

“Many thanks to Bernie for attending, giving the children a great photo opportunity and making them smile!”
