Reggie shares his inspiring journey with the Foundation

For Children’s Mental Health Week, Northampton Saints Foundation is shining a light on one of our past students, Reggie, whose journey with the Foundation demonstrates how supportive, inclusive environments can help young people rebuild confidence, thrive academically, and feel genuinely part of a community that cares for them.

He initially enrolled at college to study Sport and Active Leisure but his plans were interrupted when his family relocated, forcing him to leave the course. Three months later, he returned to the area and tried to re-enrol but was not accepted back, having missed a significant portion of the curriculum.

With limited educational options, Reggie contacted Northampton Saints Foundation, where he had previously completed a course at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens in partnership with Northampton College. He was offered a place on the HITZ programme, joining the Level 2 Employability course, which also included Functional Skills in Maths and English.

Upon his return, staff noticed a clear shift in Reggie's demeanour. Once confident and motivated, he now appeared withdrawn and struggled to engage with his learning. The change in his attitude, combined with signs of a strained relationship at home, led to additional support being put in place.

He began weekly sessions with the Foundation’s Youth Counsellor and Wellbeing Lead, Dawn Bere. Over time, the structured and supportive environment of the HITZ programme helped Reginald re-establish a daily routine and regain his confidence. After completing the course, he successfully transitioned back into mainstream education, enrolling in a Level 3 Sports Coaching course at Moulton College. “The fact I left the Foundation over two years ago and you all still here for me means the world to me I will never forget that”

Following that, Reggie took a gap year to focus on his wellbeing and life experiences. In 2025, he was accepted to study Computer Science at University. Alongside his personal progress, Reggie also returned to support the Foundation by helping deliver CAMHS half-term programme, demonstrating his ongoing connection to the Foundation that supported him during a difficult period.

“Reggie has always shown resilience and determination, no matter the personal struggles he may have faced. We are incredibly proud of the journey he has been on and grateful to have been part of it. We wish you all the very best in your next chapter.” Shirley Lynch, Employability Coach

Craig Phillips, Head of Employability & Skills “Reggie showcased determination and perseverance, overcoming educational and cultural challenges after moving from another country. By completing two courses at the Foundation, he demonstrated his commitment to achieving his goals, gaining qualifications, and embracing newfound independence. As a respected learner, he truly deserves his accomplishments, and we wish him all the best, knowing the Foundation played a part in supporting his journey”
