Foundations of Writing
Foundations of Writing
Foundations of writing is a targeted five week intervention designed to accelerate progress in writing and boost pupil confidence.
The programme provides schools with an engaging and evidence-informed approach to supporting children and young people who are:
- Working below age-related expectations in writing
- Struggling with handwriting and motor coordination
- Reluctant to engage with extended writing tasks
Delivered in an educational setting over five structured sessions, the programme supports schools in addressing barriers to writing through creative, multi-sport and rugby-themed activities. By developing key physical and cognitive foundations, pupils gain the skills, stamina and confidence needed to write successfully.
Key skill areas developed:
- Hand–eye coordination
- Hand dominance
- Upper body strength
- Crossing the midline
- Balance and stability
- Object manipulation
These core motor skills underpin fine motor control, stamina and fluency in writing. Pupils become more motivated, resilient, and confident, enabling them to engage positively in classroom writing tasks.
The Foundations of Writing programme directly supports several key areas of school improvement. It helps close attainment gaps by targeting pupils who are at risk of falling behind in literacy. The programme promotes inclusive practice through its engaging, physical approach, which is particularly effective for reluctant writers and learners with SEND. It also enhances personal development by building pupils’ confidence, motivation, and resilience. Ultimately, the programme strengthens the quality of education by reinforcing the essential skills that enable children to meet curriculum expectations in English.
