Free school resource for Black History Month and Remembrance Day

This autumn term brings two significant opportunities for schools to engage pupils in learning: Black History Month in October and Remembrance Day in November.

Both events encourage reflection on identity, diversity, community and resilience - core values embedded within the national curriculum and central to Ofsted’s focus on personal development.

To support teachers, a free, ready-to-use classroom resource has been launched, requiring no additional preparation. Pupils will have the chance to learn about Frank Anderson, Northampton Saints’ first mixed-race player, while exploring themes of representation and heritage.

The resource also introduces the Tackling Heritage Programme, a five-week curriculum-linked initiative developed in partnership with Northampton Saints Community team.

The programme combines local history, national themes and practical rugby sessions to help pupils discover how individuals and communities have shaped shared heritage, while promoting diversity and resilience.

Why schools are choosing Tackling Heritage

  • Fully aligned with Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework, supporting Personal Development, Behaviour & Attitudes, and Physical & Emotional Wellbeing.
  • Meets key objectives of PESSPA (Physical Education, School Sport & Physical Activity) and the Primary PE & Sport Premium.
  • Directly connects to local history curriculum objectives across KS2-KS3.
  • Builds cultural capital by spotlighting underrepresented stories, including Frank Anderson, one of Northampton’s pioneering black players.

Programme highlights

  • 10 hours of content across five weeks, blending one hour of classroom learning with one hour of rugby coaching each week.
  • Inspires pupils with stories of Edgar Mobbs, Frank Anderson, Arthur ‘Freddie’ Blakiston, and others.
  • Links global themes of migration, diversity, and remembrance with local heritage.
  • Schools interested in experiencing the full programme are invited to arrange a discussion or book a taster session.
