Tackling Character

The Tackling Character Programme is designed to help children and young people develop the essential character traits they need to thrive, both in school and in life.

Rooted in the core values of rugby - Teamwork, Respect, Discipline, Enjoyment, Sportsmanship, and Understanding, this programme empowers pupils to apply these principles in the classroom, on the pitch, and in their everyday routines.

The programme is fully aligned with the PSHE curriculum and supports pupils’ personal development and mental health and wellbeing across all phases:

  • KS1: Understanding right and wrong, beginning to recognise emotions, and building empathy and cooperation.
  • KS2: Strengthening decision-making, resilience, and respect for others, while exploring strategies to manage emotions and relationships.
  • KS3: Building independence, exploring identity and belonging, managing peer influence, and developing coping strategies to support positive mental health.

The programme is delivered through weekly sessions that combine interactive discussion with practical, sport-based activities, creating a safe and supportive environment for pupils to explore values and behaviours.

Throughout the sessions, pupils have opportunities to practise key personal and social skills such as resilience, teamwork, calmness under pressure, empathy, and problem-solving, skills that link directly to improved wellbeing and positive mental health outcomes. Each session also includes structured reflection tasks, encouraging pupils to recognise their individual strengths, celebrate their achievements, and set meaningful goals for personal growth and future success.
