Tackling Numeracy

Tackling Numeracy

The Tackling Numeracy Programme uses the excitement of rugby to transform how children and young people engage with mathematics.

Over five weeks, pupils explore numeracy through real-life, rugby-themed challenges that strengthen confidence, problem-solving, and reasoning skills, while showing how maths is used every day.

The programme is carefully mapped to National Curriculum objectives:

  • KS1: Developing fluency in counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; using money in practical contexts; and recognising 2D/3D shapes in the real world.
  • KS2: Strengthening place value, fractions, decimals, percentages, and measurement; applying data handling and statistics; and solving multi-step problems in context.
  • KS3: Applying algebra, ratio, and proportion; deepening understanding of geometry and probability; and interpreting and representing data.

Programme highlights

  • Saints shop challenge: Pupils manage a pop-up Northampton Saints merchandise shop, applying skills in money, addition, subtraction, and percentages.
  • Design your stadium: Learners use measurement, area, perimeter, and geometry to create their own rugby stadium plans.
  • Data in sport: Pupils interpret player statistics, match results, and performance data to explore averages, percentages, and probability.
  • Match-day maths: Practical problems link timetables, ticket pricing, and crowd numbers to everyday numeracy applications.

The Tackling Numeracy Programme helps pupils strengthen fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving across the maths curriculum while demonstrating the relevance of numeracy in real-world and sporting contexts. It supports the development of resilience, teamwork, and confidence, particularly for pupils who may lack motivation in traditional maths lessons, and builds transferable skills that prepare them for future success in education, work, and beyond.
